There’s a fascinating stop in Homer’s Odyssey where Odysseus and his crew arrive at Aeolia, the floating island home of Aeolus, the Keeper of the Winds. Aeolus, moved by Odysseus’ story, offers him a tightly bound bag containing all the winds that would hinder their voyage, leaving only the west wind to speed them toward Ithaca. For nine days, the ships sail smoothly, Ithaca in sight. But just before landing, Odysseus’ curious and suspicious crew opens the bag, unleashing a storm that hurls them...
