Thanks for such a clearly-worded commentary on my recent remarks about the origin of the enneagram subtypes. Yes, I definitely see the types and subtypes as archetypal in nature. So I wouldn’t refer to them as either “instinctual subtypes” (Palmer/Daniels) or “instinctual variants” (Riso/Hudson), for the very reason you mention: that it focuses all the emphasis on instinct, not archetype.
