Book Review: Doorways into the Mystery of the Universe by Oscar Ichazo

Oscar Ichazo’s Doorways into the Mystery of the Universe is a text that both invites and instructs. It pulls the reader closer to the great mysteries of existence while offering glimpse of teaching from the Arica School to approach them. From the opening pages, the book sets a tone of generosity, as Ichazo shares teachings that are at once metaphysical and practical.
In her introduction, Sarah Ichazo underscores the significance of this work, noting that “Ichazo…originated the complete teachings and application of the enneagram…” This context situates the book not only as a mystical exploration but also as an extension of Ichazo’s lifetime of contributions to teaching for spiritual development.
The book introduces foundational concepts central to Ichazo’s system: the eternal presence, the divine flower, and final attainment. These ideas bring into understanding the reader in the frameworks through which the rest of the text unfolds. From there, Ichazo leads us into the study of yantras, symbolic diagrams that function as essential “doorways.” Yantras originates from the Sanskrit words “Yam” (to control) and “tra” (tool) are traditionally, tools Hindu practitioners use to control, curb, or influence their minds to evoke certain energies and receive spiritual transformation and unity with the divine. Ichazo goes into detail that the yantra he presents are portals that aid the practitioner to go into deeper states of consciousness, offering a visual and meditative path toward transcendence.
Separate to the yantras that are introduced, the scarab from ancient civilization also is an important map to the transformation that each person undergo. Here, Ichazo portrays the transformation from the bottom of the scarab as the somatic mind, past 18 steps, all the way through to the top, the transcendental mind, as an ascendant from bodily identification to a higher integration of self. This symbolic metamorphosis was not only important for the ancient mind but also the modern mind as we seek alignment to our higher energies.
In conclusion, Doorways into the Mystery of the Universe serves as both a map and a catalyst. Through yantras and symbolic images like the scarab, Ichazo nudges the reader toward the integration of their highest sense. If you’re interested in delving into Arica’s teachings, this book is an excellent place to begin.

Thanks for this, it conveys a deep understanding of the book and its significance in Ichazo’s body of work. Very important is the emphasis on the need for practice beyond simple intellectual study.
