When I first saw David Lean’s “Lawrence of Arabia” at 21, I intensely identified with the movie and the title character. I wanted to live and feel that deeply, regardless of risk to health or sanity. The way to do that, the movie convinced me, was to live and immerse yourself in a foreign culture.
