Dear Friends of the Monthly,
As the lazy, hazy, and sometimes crazy days of summer come to an end, it seems once again we’ve skipped the vacationing mindset and instead immersed ourselves in one of our favorite pastimes: observing the consistent and recognizable traits, quirks, and idiosyncrasies of human personalities. Just look at the main figures paraded daily in the news.
We seem to be living through a time of increased polarization and fragmentation, particularly affecting Western culture, though perhaps less so in other parts of the world. The year 2024 is especially notable, with a significant number of important political elections taking place. However, these elections feel less about traditional disputes between balanced, middle-class societies and more about the extremes of opposing ideologies. This shift could be a result of the dominance of digital communication, which tends to engage only our heads, while leaving our hearts and guts out of the conversation. The rise of this electronic age parallels an increasing disconnection from nature and a trend toward ever-narrower specialization.
In “the good old days”—if indeed they ever truly existed—people required a broader range of skills to survive, many of which were grounded in a respect for the laws of nature. Farming, gardening, cooking, building, engineering, healing, counseling, teaching, researching, mothering, and fathering were woven into life experiences, learned through observation and obligation. What we once called “common sense” was generally a reflection of what was widely observed and agreed upon without mental gymnastics.
Today, we live in an age of endless, far-reaching, and seductive options. Yet, amidst all this freedom, many of us are still searching for something solid—something that resonates with a deeper truth.
