Well, never a dull moment, as the saying goes,  gives fresh meaning to the curse of: “may you live in interesting times.”  I’m not sure if this is a Chinese proverb, but sounds like “it’s better to be a dog in peaceful times, than a man in a chaotic period,”  which is a bonified  Chinese gem.
